First Snow or Powdered Donut? by Earleywine First Snow or Powdered Donut? by Earleywine
A 15 x 23 drawing on the handmade bark paper (you know I am loving that paper). LOL It is mixed media - Prismacolor Drawing Pencils - Sepia and Sanguine. Derwent Drawing Pencils - Wheat and Chinese White. Charcoal, of course. And, some white acrylic paint. Yes, I can do this - I am the artist! :P

This is not the best photo of the drawing - I will be replacing it with a better quality one within the next couple of days

This is "Lucy", a young grizzly bear cub that was somehow abandoned or separated from her mother in Alaska and rescued from starvation. She now resides at the Montana Grizzly Encounter, which is a wonderful bear rescue place about 10 miles from me. This drawing of her is from a visit a made this fall, during our first really good snow storm. I love going out to visit their 5 bears. I am trying to decide if I should name the drawing "First Snow" because of it being our first snow of the year, as well as Lucy's first good snow. Or if I should name it "Powdered Donut" because that is what she reminds me of. I am going to set up a poll on my page if anyone wants to vote.

Thank you. To me the most important thing is to capture the personality or soul of the animal. If you do that, the rest will fall into place

How did I ever miss this :stupidme: What an incredibly beautiful drawing, I love the snow on the fur, it looks so real  Is the background the natural colour and structure of this bark paper ? It looks wonderful !

Well, thank you :). The bark paper has the swirls and a wonderful texture. Every piece is different. Hard to work with at times, but I think worth the effort in the end

It's incredibly beautiful, but I can imagine it can be hard to work with, you probably also can't just draw any subject on it, but I really like the effects

It does limit you somewhat - if you want fine detail, you need a different kind of paper

Love this as I love all your art, and you know as well as anyone, a title really sells a painting. I'd call it first snow.

This is so adorable!

How do you like the Derwent pencils? I've not been the happiest with the Prismacolor lately...they break too easily.

Sharpening any of the art pencils is a major headache actually. They all break easily because the leads are so soft. Electric sharpeners are worthless because they break inside of them and are hard to get out. The best way I have found is to sharpen them with a razor blade, then bring them to a point with sandpaper. But, in answer to your question, they are all about the same as far as breaking easily.
