Hawk Eyes by Earleywine Hawk Eyes by Earleywine
9 x 12 Conte' Crayon on Bark Paper

This is the second time that I have drawn this Red Tailed Hawk, and I am still not totally satisfied with him. The first time I drew him was from the side, and although the drawing was anatomically correct, I didn't feel that I captured the life in the bird. I am a bit happier with this one, but not so much with the straight on angle. I may do him one more time, but turn his head to one side.

I came upon this Red Tailed Hawk when I lived on Cape Cod. He was under some trees eating a snake he had caught. I pulled over to take some photos, expecting him to fly at any moment. But instead he was very curious about me, and as I started making little clicking noises with my tongue - he hopped closer and closer. Staring at me. hahaha I thought for a moment that he was going to come right into the car. Instead he stopped just feet from me and stared intently at me for a good 5 minutes before he decided to fly off.

Very good work Pam, very detailed on the Hawk and free hand effects on the back ground, natural effects like stones... :)

To me, this drawing is perfect! :) I know it's not easy being satisfied with one's own creative work, but yours are really outstanding.
Great comment, too! I love to read the story behind a beautiful picture. This must have been a magical moment for you. Wild animals coming so close without having been fed can also seem a little creepy sometimes, I guess.
I just have to +watch you. :)

Thank you so much :). It is always magic when a wild creature looks you in the eye, be it ever so brief. Thank you for the watch as well, that is always the best compliment of all

This is breathtakingly beautiful. You are right, I can see why you're not happy with the very straight angle, but you captured it so well! The amount of detail and texture in the feathers is simply incredible, and I quite like the patterned paper too, it suits the rough character of a bird of prey.

Hello again! I saw this and remembered when you came into the Frame Garden the other day. I really want to find some of that bark paper to try my hand at it. Take care!

[link] There you go :). Buckskin is the best color. Ivory is beautiful but really delicate. Cinnamon is nice, but pretty dark. Marble ........ don't go there. Looks like a Holstein cow.

I love that attitude in his eyes, they are great looking birds and great snake hunters. I had the pleasure of painting one for a book some time ago but lost the original... wonderful colours. You managed a great pose :)
