OMG! I thought this was a photograph at first glance. I can't believe the detail. The water on either side of the goose...one side ripples and smooth and the other side in motion with bubbles. The different pattern of the feathers are beautiful and the sun shinning only on a portion of the back. The eyeball has the light reflection too.
I have often wondered how the painter thinks of a subject to paint and then it travels down the arm to the hand and then onto the canvas. ha ha I think it's amazing. Great painting!

LOL Well, I don't know about that. But it was one of those things where I was disappointed in the photos I took, but had it in my head what I wanted to do, so I did it anyway

Layers of transparent paint.

Do you have to wait till the layers of paint dry before you add more?

Yes, but when I do transparent layers, I use Winsor-Newton's Liquin. That is a medium that not only increases the transparency, but also makes it dry faster.

Can you do this (or- do you do this) also with opaque colors?

My oils are usually kind of a time consuming process. I start out by painting the main shapes and lights and darks with opaque colors. Then usually go over it once more refining the detail and adding more. Then I start adding more color and more detail with transparent colors :)

Thanks so much :). That was the first time I tried painting water, and the dang painting was a 24 x 36 canvas. I should have started with something smaller - danged thing took forever!! haha
